About Sam Styron

Sam is a professional civil engineer and a professional agricultural aviation pilot (crop duster).

Upon completion of a 4 year tour with the United States Air Force Sam attended and graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia College of Engineering in 1985 with a Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering. Styron worked for multi-disciplined firms in Columbia and Kansas City. Most of that time was spent surveying, designing, preparing studies and reports, and construction observation on water and waste water projects.

In ‘92 Sam began to pursue an alternate career in the professional aerial application (aka, crop dusting) industry. While trying to get the flying career off the ground Sam discovered an opportunity in Cass County to provide engineering services alongside the crop dusting businesss. Since 1994, he has been president and principal engineer of Samuel J. Styron Consulting Engineers, Inc. and is responsible for managing the day to day operations of the firm as well as performing project management, engineering design, client contact and business development. The focus of engineering at SJS has been site development and municipal infrastructure improvements including water and sewer systems, waste water treatment and storm water control and conveyance design.

Sam is also the owner and operator of 1Lowflyer, Inc., a “crop care by air” provider. Sam has more than 2,500 hours of pilot time spraying, fertilizing and seeding crops.  Styron Aerial Application or 1Lowflyer, Inc. has been operating since 1993 providing services in Missouri, Kansas and Iowa.

Sam lives outside Harrisonville, Missouri with his wife (of 21+ years) and three children.  Wife Pattie is a full time mother. She has a bachelors degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia, College of Health Related Professions, as a Medical Technologist.  Pattie worked at Moberly Regional Hospital and Clinical Reference Laboratory prior to settling into fulltime motherhood.

Firm History

Sam Styron, P.E. began Samuel J. Styron Consulting Engineers, Inc. (SJS) after working for several years at multi-disciplined engineering firms in Kansas City and Columbia, Missouri. While pursuing an alternate career Sam discovered an opportunity to open his own engineering office. SJS is based in Harrisonville, Missouri, and has provided engineering services from this location since 1994. SJS provides engineering services to municipalities and private residential and commercial developers.

Office Location
SJS is located a block south of the City of Harrisonville, Missouri, historic Cass County court house square in the old bus station depot building. Many soldiers were bussed away to the military from this location.

SJS Consulting Engineers, Inc. moved into this building in 2002 after sharing office space with Bowers Survey Company for several years.

Firm Experience
SJS engineering services include development and improvements planning, studies, reports, layout, engineering surveying, design, bid letting, construction administration and construction inspection. Project type experiences includes sports field complexes, commercial and residential developments, waste water treatment, streets, sewer collection system, water distribution system, storm water collection and control, FEMA flood plain analysis, box culverts and bridges, hydrology and hydraulics.

SJS employs computer technology in design and construction plan preparation. Hydraulic calculations, storm water calculations and construction plans are completed utilizing CADD and other civil engineering design software.

Professional Registration
Both Sam and the SJS firm are licensed and registered to provide engineering services in Missouri and Kansas.

Quality Assurance
SJS makes it a practice to perform multiple field investigations before and during the design to insure the designed feature will fit the siteis practical in terms of cost and constructability. Further, to insure quality of design, the calculations, approach and plans are reviewed to assure that the problems that are intended to be solved by the public improvement are being effectively addressed with the design.
